State of Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation
Alaska DEC is tasked with protecting the wellbeing of Alaskans, but it faces unique challenges in Fairbanks. The Golden Heart region has environmental characteristics that result in some of the nation’s worst air quality. The primary cause is smoke from wood stoves, which many residents use due to the high cost of municipal energy and low cost of firewood in a place famous for super-sub-zero temps. DEC works to inspire residents to take simple steps that can protect their whole community.
